Jared Lindsay Clark returns to Virginia (MFA at VCU) from his home in Salt Lake City, Utah for his opening at the newly named Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) this Thursday, January 26th. (220 Parks Ave. Virginia Beach) Jared comes fresh off an exciting exhibit at the Salt Lake Art Center, The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art with two incredible 'bild' installations which can be seen below. He will be creating a small build at the MOCA this week, and another in New York City the following week for our opening at ADA Gallery's sister space , Mulherin + Pollard. Jared will be showing with Bruce Wilhelm and Shannon Wright, Opening February 3rd. 6-9pm. (187 Chrystie St. NYC)

Mimi & I were trying to enjoy the drink tickets given to us by Peter.. free is free.. but we were too emotional to hang out. But that beer was good!

I, An Actress has been getting lots of play in the past few years. It was curated by Marc Siegel in the Berlin Biennale in 2009, and we showed it with David Gryn and Art Projx Cinema 2011 at the SVA Theater in conjunction with VOLTA & The Armory Show last March, and that same weekend Ed Halter picked it to run before his amazing interview with George at VOLTA NY. It also shows daily on Youtube & at film festivals and the like.. but being part of the Film Registry is just a sublime achievement for George. Fantastic!!

George in his apartment in San Francisco in 2009. I loved being in his apartment. We'd watch videos. He'd make copies of videos for me on his DVD duplicator. We'd talk about his life & friends. Then we'd go eat.

I really wish he had lived to see the PS1 show & the Whitney Biennial. He'd greet everyone and say , "This is my show. Thanks for coming. I hope you enjoy it."

These are two comics by Ada artist George Kuchar on view with at our booth at the NADA Miami art fair going on now (December 1-4, 2011) at the . We have another large three panel comic piece, a biography of H.P.Lovecraft that was published in Arcade comics in 1975. There is a wonderful exhibit going on now through January 15th at MoMA PS1 that includes a great blowup of this work. We also have a great pastel work and George's last drawing which was done while he was in El Reno, Oklahoma this summer.

We're obviously very sad about George's passing, but we are delighted to exhibit George's work at NADA and to have the chance to tell everyone willing to listen about how wonderful & important he was & still is.

A presentation of Kuchar's films at The Museum of Modern Art, on Thursday, November 17, will coincide with the exhibition.

George Kuchar (American, 1942-2011) was among the most prolific and influential American filmmakers of the last half century. His more than two hundred low-budget films, many made with his twin brother, Mike, regularly feature his friends and students, pioneering a camp aesthetic that has inspired generations of filmmakers and artists. Based in San Francisco since the early 1970s, where he taught for four decades at the San Francisco Art Institute, Kuchar grew up in New York City, in the Bronx, where he began his career, before resettling in California in 1971.

Here's a great shot of George's beautiful smile. I'll never forget that grin!
I'm so happy to be with George it looks like i've turned in to some sort of frog in this photo! This was outside the Tap-Tap in Miami during Basel Week of 2009.

This was just a few weeks ago, outside George's hospice, George's twin brother Mike is taking George for his daily stroll around the Castro. When they got home from their walk, we all sat outside in the courtyard at the hospice and had lunch. It was really George's lunch but he made everyone there share what we brought him as well as what the hospice brought out for lunch. In fact, from his wheelchair he swung his arm out at me with a little pork chop on a fork and made me eat it! it was pretty darn good i must say. This was the last day I'd see George.

This is a still from Vault of Vapors, George's 2009 summer weather diary. At our show in NYC at Mulherin + Pollard, he titled this still "Bumpy Heavens". George loved the weather. He was really a meteorologist, and he'd remind you of that fact when explaining some weather phenomenon.

Here we are after our show in NYC in the fall of 2010. We had just had dinner with his pal from childhood Larry Leibowitz. That night, so many of George's old & new pals came out for our opening. Jonas Mekas, Todd Solondz, Kristen Schaal, Ratzo, many others, i'll have to come back and write more. In fact, I could & should have a whole blog devoted to George.

Oh George it's hard to think you're gone.

This coming September, Rachel Hayes returns to Richmond & Ada Gallery with a collaborative project with Jiha Moon. These images are of their installation at the LAB gallery space in NYC earlier this year. Obviously these two were thirsting to work together again, so Jiha's upcoming show at Reynolds became that opportunity. Besides a large installation piece, they will be exhibiting about ten collaborative works. Stay tuned for more info.

And a new direction: these new paintings are void of characters or caricature, no figures or fingers (despite the title), no hamburgers or fat men. was born in New York City in 1980. She currently lives and works in Chicago. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as Exit Art (NYC), Claremorris Gallery (Ireland), The Yeosu Art Festival (Korea), The Contemporary Artists Center (Massachusetts), Ellen Curlee Gallery (St. Louis), NorthEastern University (Boston) and Root Division (San Francisco). In Chicago, she has shown at venues including Columbia College, The Post Family Gallery, Kasia Kay Art Projects, Johalla Projects and the MDW Fair. She has upcoming solo sows for 2011-2012 at ADA Gallery (Richmond, VA) and the CAC’s Bolt Residency Gallery (Chicago, IL).

Kendler is co-founder of the not-for-profit Endangered Species Print Project, a member of the artist collective Henbane, and the author of Wunderkammer, a blog on environmental art. All profits from her work are donated to support biodiversity and environmental justice.

Nina Bovasso's What's Your Bubble? and Bruce Wilhelm's Airlock

Nina Bovasso presents a new series of small works on paper where her signature densely constructed, colorful, abstract ‘mound’ form is given levity with the addition of legs and feet appropriated from the human form, Disney and Breughel.

Richmond, Virgina born artist Bruce Wilhelm’s latest series of paintings take their inspiration from Shopenhauer's black box to Carl Sagan's Cosmos, turned pizza box. In Wilhelm’s psychedelic landscapes, he hopes to take the viewer to the megaliths of Mars.

This exhibition of two artists’ one-person shows, will be Mulherin and Pollard’s final exhibit at our Tenth Avenue space. A new Lower East Side location is soon to be announced.

Artist George Kuchar’s remarkable oeuvre of over 200 films and videos holds a unique place in 20th century cinema. Theorist Gene Youngblood named him one of the great artists in the history of the moving image. He is admired by many notable filmmakers including Todd Solondz, Gus Van Sant, David Lynch, and Brian De Palma. John Waters considers Kuchar and his brother Mike to be his biggest influence, “more than Kenneth Anger or The Wizard of Oz”.

Kuchar’s “Hold Me While I’m Naked”, ranked one of 100 Best Films of the 20th Century by the Village Voice, continues to delight with its mixture of good-natured vulgarity and tawdry humor.

His equally impressive graphic work reflects his involvement in the underground comic scene of the 1970’s where he rubbed shoulders with Art Spiegelman, Bill Griffith and Robert Crumb, publishing in the infamous underground comic “Arcade”.

George Kuchar’s films and videos have been recognized through countless awards and grants, including The National Endowment for the Arts, The Eureka Fellowship Program, and a Ford Foundation Fellowship from United States Artists.

George is the recipient of the prestigious Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists from the American Film Institute, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Independent/Experimental Film and Video. His most recent, major work, “Secrets of the Shadow World” received full funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. Long time ADA gallery artist Jared Clark is showing this month at Mulherin Pollard Projects in Chelsea.
Jared Clark’s varied and idiosyncratic art practice encompasses sculpture, drawing, collage and video, playfully transgressing the boundaries between these modes of production. While the act of making is performed explicitly in Clark’s time-based work, there is a lingering suggestion of performance threaded throughout his oeuvre.

Clark’s ‘bilds’ are constructed from materials that are both familiar and odd - cutting boards, luggage, soap, craft paintings, ceramic figurines, map pins, painted rocks, Styrofoam, fruit, and glass - and appear to be simultaneously carefully constructed, balanced and casual. Whether fixed in place with adhesives, or stacked between trees, there is a sense that these structures are provisional, a pause in an ongoing, mutating, stream of creation. Clark approaches history as a material, and much like the objects he picks up and manipulates, it is transformed through his deft touch. His elegant mash-up of minimalism, action painting and pop art shows a striking grasp of color and form, and his delight in materiality is conveyed equally through his use of natural substances, manufactured objects, the old and the new.

Clark’s sculptures and wall pieces are like small islands, gatherings of ceramic figurines and other thrift-store objects huddled together. The poured resin joining them serves as both base and picture plane, confounding our expectations of front and back, or top and bottom. Through his work, Clark pokes at our assumptions, encouraging us to reconsider both art history and the everyday. His actions, and the objects that he offers, are a liberating force that are sure to delight. Clark's work serves as an object lesson, revealing the infinite ways in which the world can be remade.

James Trotter can't be called a man of single interest. His activities
range from telecasts about the origins and history of soul music and occult phenomenon. He is a scholar of regional ebonics, teenage code and unmarked police cars.

For the Charlotte Street Foundation, Julie Rodriques Widholm wrote, "When looking at James Trotter‘s drawings it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that his artistic pursuits began as a child drawing Star Wars characters and writing graffiti while visiting his grandmother in Brooklyn. His interest in popular culture—music, comics, toys, garage sales, flea markets, and e-bay—find their way into his burgeoning toy collection and prolific drawing practice; he has made more than 500 drawings so far this year.
Originally from Miami, Trotter briefly attended KCAI and has stayed in Kansas City, making a career as DJ Superwolf, playing 1960s and 70s soul and funk records and dealing rare 45s overseas in the U.K. and Japan. Trotter maintains a three-pronged engagement to popular culture through drawings, toy installations, and music. His drawings range from quick line sketches to more elaborate constellations of cartoon characters in the vein of R. Crumb, along with food, corporate logos, body parts and records overlapping and interacting and fighting to make sense. Trotter is peculiarly un-precious about his work, which is strewn all over his studio and pinned to the wall. Trotter’s insistence that there are no “corrections” in his drawings demonstrates the conviction of his mark-making using only ink or gouache. He does not use pencil or erasers, although he has developed a recent fondness for white-out as an additional layer to the work. Concerns of conviction and correctness translate into the subject of Trotter’s work as well. He frequently voices his frustration with the United States, not in terms of politics, but more social frustration with political correctness and being afraid to say what one really thinks. While his views may seem brusque, he appears to be trying to get at the daily struggles that beset everyone as part of the human condition. Perhaps this angst is what turns him to music and toys, the safe-havens of childhood fantasy and escape. He collects vintage toys and records from the 1970s and 1980s: seeking out specific toys he couldn’t afford as a child, while others recall the abundance of free candy and toys symbolized by Halloween and Christmas. A tree-house overflowing with his toys, lights and a miniature train embodies the notion of a child’s (and perhaps adult’s) utopia of innocence. At first, I thought Trotter’s work must be a critique of consumption, but it is not. It is about value and resuscitating value into objects, ideas, and memories that are so quickly discarded.

ADA gallery artist Scott Hewicker has co-curated this wonderful exhibit with Larry Rinder ( director of BAM/PFA ) at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive. It is up through December 5th this year.

Hauntology, essentially the logic of the ghost, is a concept as ephemeral and abstract as the term implies. Since it was first used by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida in a 1993 lecture delivered at UC Riverside concerning the state of Marxist thought in the post-Communist era, the term hauntology has been widely discussed in philosophical and political circles, as well as becoming a major influence in the development of various sub-genres of electronic music.

This exhibition focuses primarily on the museum’s recent contemporary acquisitions, mixing these with a number of other works representing a wide range of periods and styles. Although the artists included in Hauntology do not necessarily see themselves as part of a larger movement, when viewed collectively a number of resonances appear, not unrelated to the musical interpretations of the theme. Works in Hauntology frequently incorporate archaic imagery, styles, or techniques and evoke uncertainty, mystery, inexpressible fears, and unsatisfied longing.

For Derrida himself, hauntology is a philosophy of history that upsets the easy progression of time by proposing that the present is simultaneously haunted by the past and the future. Specifically, Derrida suggests that the specter of Marxist utopianism haunts the present, capitalist society, in what he describes as “the persistence of a present past.” The notion of hauntology also can be seen as describing the fluidity of identity among individuals, marking the dynamic and inevitable shades of influence that link one person’s experience to another’s, both in the present and over time.

In the fifteen years since Derrida first used this term, hauntology, and the related term, hauntological, have been adopted by the British music critic Simon Reynolds to describe a recurring influence in electronic music created primarily by artists in the United Kingdom who use and manipulate samples culled from the past (mostly old wax-cylinder recordings, classical records, library music, or postwar popular music) to invoke either a euphoric or unsettling view of an imagined future. The music has an anachronistic quality hinting at an unrecognizable familiarity that is often dreamlike, blurry, and melancholic—what Reynolds describes as “an uneasy mixture of the ancient and the modern.”

This exhibition marks the first time that a museum has presented works of visual art within the framework of hauntology. Works by Luc Tuymans, Paul Sietsema, Carrie Mae Weems, Bruce Conner, Robert Gutierrez, Diane Arbus, Travis Collinson, Paul Schiek, Arnold Kemp, and others form loose groups in which one can discern various thematic concentrations: the enigma of place and placelessness, memorial and longing, transitional beings, displacement and disappearance, demonic manifestations, auras, elegies of nature, and the translucency of the psyche.

Here are a few shots of Morgan Herrin's latest wood sculpture on view at Mulherin Pollard Projects in Chelsea, NYC. Dallas born and Richmond based artist, Morgan Herrin creates these masterpieces from construction grade 2x4's.

Herrin's wood sculptures have been highly sought after since debuting with ADA gallery in Richmond,Virginia selling to Lance Armstrong at a fair in New York in 2007 which was profiled in the New York Post, as well as The International Art Newspaper. Last year, Armstrong bought a second piece from ADA gallery, an incredible 6ft diameter globe piece with a fallen female figure, which is on view at The Livestrong Foundation in Austin. While touring the facility in a 2010 Men's Journal interview he says, "I love the Herrin piece because I know how much pain and work goes into each one of them".

Morgan's statement on this piece: "Untitled (Knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor, and geological cave structure. Studied separately, these two subjects are completely unrelated. The manmade geometric precision of plate armor is formally opposite of the flowing, organic stalactites and stalagmites. Seen together, these two parts present a striking contrast in form and create a theme of time and the effects of nature. The pose of the figure and the general composition are references to the classical sculpture "The Dying Gaul" of ancient Roman antiquity. Rendered entirely in laminated construction-grade 2 by 4s, the material itself irreverently contradicts this classical allusion, and at the same time draws attention to our own culture's reliance on the fast, cheap, and impermanent."

Mulherin Pollard Projects is pleased to present GEORGE KUCHAR: ALWAYS & FOREVER at the new Chelsea gallery's fourth exhibit since it's opening in June. We will be featuring video and film works by American artist George Kuchar ranging from his legendary underground days of the early 60's through his weather diaries made this summer. We will also be exhibiting, and in some ways, introducing the NYC art public to George's paintings, drawings, comics made over the years, as well as, film stills made with the help of The Anthology Film Archives in NYC and The Harvard Film Archive.

Katharine Mulherin (Toronto, CANADA) and John Pollard (Richmond, Virginia) are pleased to announce their collaboration in opening their New York City gallery, Mulherin Pollard Projects , located in Chelsea at 317 10th Avenue. With an exhibition titled, Friends and Family, the gallery’s inaugural opening was this past Thursday, June 17. Friends and Family features new works by Seth Scriver (TORONTO), Daniel Davidson (BROOKLYN), Winnie Truong (TORONTO) and Jeremiah Johnson (WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA) .
The exhibition runs from June 17 to July 3, 2010.

Katharine Mulherin and John Pollard met at an art fair in New York in 2006 and have been friends ever since. They recognized that they share a similar background as artists who became gallerists to create community in their respective cities. The two dealers have been talking for a while about how to partner their programs. Both Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects (TORONTO, LOS ANGELES ) and Pollard’s ADA Gallery (RICHMOND, VIRGINIA) feature artists with both emerging and extensive careers, whose works engaging, intelligent, collected and honored.

Gian Pierotti, current student in the graduate crafts dept. at VCU, will take this newly created ceramic watercraft, Boatlandia, down the James River on Saturday. You have to hear this in his own words...
"As some of you know I have built a terra cotta boat to float down the James river with me inside. My future is unknown. The vessel and her sea worthiness is unknown. My destination is unknown. Please come and witness Boatlandia and her maiden voyage."
Gian's expedition occurs this Saturday morning (the 17th) at 10:00 am. He will launch his boat at the Osborn boat ramp which is about a 5 minute drive from Richmond.

Oh that smarts! "Nature Attacks", this nifty pipe cleaner sculpture by Don Porcella is on view with several others, as well as many of his encaustic paintings. Don shows this month (October 09) with Carly Haffner and Bryan Zanisnik.

Opening at the CACV in Virginia Beach this Thursday, "A Fluid Wilderness" by Sandra Luckett. Sugar Water, this beautiful egg sculpture measures 8' x 8'. Look inside the peephole and you'll find her beautiful little paper seascape. It's made of sequins, wood, glitter glue, flocking and ralph lauren paint. See some of Sandra's older work here....

Here are a few sights from last years Virginia State Fair. I can almost taste the grilled onions and watered down beer! Though I love the Best Uses of Duct Tape exhibit every year , The Demolition Derby is probably my favorite event. And, My teeth aren't their "whitest" but you won't catch me in that chair getting zapped! Aliens!

ABLE BROWN in NY TIMES !

Drawing & Typing his way to fame, ABLE BROWN, Brooklyn's funniest park ranger was spotlighted in Sunday's New York Times for his work in FRENZ a group show curated by Will Oldham at Fleisher Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia. Show also includes Shary Boyle, Lori Damiano, Kyle Field, Jill Gallenstein, Sammy Harkham, Alan Licht, Ashley Macomber, Joanne Oldham, Leslie Shows and Spencer Sweeney.

Able took part in our CRUDE show, as well as, two of our Salon Selective exhibitions. Look for Able's work to re-appear in ADA gallery this year complete with a standup comedy performance.

Derick Melander in the NEW YORK TIMES today !!

This is so awesome that I've had to put this on both ada gallery blogs....
Derick Melander( exhibited with ADA gallery at Scope Miami last year and in Richmond this past May ) is currently exhibiting at the Katonah Museum of Art and has just been reviewed by the New York Times in The Style Section (print) and in The Moment (blog). Both reviews include a photo of Derick's piece, which is entitled: "Where do you Begin". This sculpture, nearly 12 feet tall, is comprised of carefully folded, women's clothing and dates back '03. Get there and see this piece !!! ( show ends October 4th ).

This is a photo shot last year of Morgan Herrin's latest wood sculpture being made, this was somewhere in the middle stages of completion. The piece has been finished recently and already sold! We will be showing this new piece at the gallery on Broad Street, opening June 5, 2009. ADA gallery sold Morgan Herrin's first piece to cylclist and cancer advocate, Lance Armstrong . I'll put up a finished photo soon.

This is one of Barbara's new collages that exhibited at ada last month, her show was titled MEATY PASTORALS. Barbara received a Guggenheim fellowship in 2007, has been a Heinz Foundation fellow at the Virginia Center for The Arts 05-07 and has had recent shows ADA gallery and DEAN PROJECTS (Long Island City).
We also showed some great hamburger watercolors last summer, though about american greed and the perpetually hungry Buddhist ghost, they went nicely w/ my free hot dog saturdays!

Mr. Williamsburg came to Virginia in the bottom of the Chinese bus, Doyle & JPL had it running for the first time at our opening on March 20. We don't have the ink flowing in this video.... David Byrne @ ADA in Miami 2006

Another throw back from ADA gallery's time machine... David Byrne stopped by my booth at Scope Miami back in December of 2006. In the background of the photo is Shannon Wright's miracle healing Kidney / Urinary tract wallpaper and other works. He seemed to really like a piece by Sandra Luckett, which was a record player w/ a disco ball and a forest of winterized trees that spun around and made a shiny version of the Northern Lights on the wall.
I been in love w/ the Talking Heads & DB's work since I was in middle school. Talking Heads 77 is one of the best records ever. And He came by ADA gallery again at Scope New York 2007 with friend Cindy Sherman , who bought a piece !! I swear I was oh-so-close to simultaneously passing out & crying upon two of my heroes.
