NICK FAGAN : MUNDANE

NICK FAGAN : MUNDANE

ADA Gallery presented “Mundane,” a show of new paintings by artist, Nick Fagan, from Friday, May 4th through Saturday May 26th, 2018.

Gazer, latex on canvas, 20h x 16w x 1 1/2d in, 2018

"Transcendent experiences, meditative or catalyzed, serve as temporary solutions from the everyday routine—but not an escape.

Habits of ritual and routine more or less define the human experience. In our everyday lives, I have noticed that various exchanges and conversations can loop, presenting a sense of numbness, autonomy or disassociation from the real. In an attempt to break or transcend these rooted measures, we seek mind altering experiences like psychedelics or other forms of deep meditation to extend past a more-or-less bounded, corporeal reality. But when speaking of the artificial means to this journey, what happens when psychedelic trips are not insightful, are no longer revelatory, or perhaps nothing more than drug-induced illusions? A false sense of the profound manifests—what psychologists might call delusions of grandeur. This temporary shift of viewpoint and valuation thus defeats any attempt to escape.

These paintings function as a meeting point between escapism and the mundane. Hands or tumbling bodies emerge from these semi-psychedelic grounds, manifesting dystopian, mental environments. The muted pastel acid has become washed in the sun, appearing bitten by amorphous rays. Shapes spin and layer onto one another, insinuating a continuous cycle of flux and regurgitation."

Commerce, latex on canvas, 60h x 46w x 1 1/2d in, 2018
